Elizabeth's and Preston Majors' Honeymoon will literably be the first-ever human space flight past Mars, while only Frank Hodges, the first man stays home.  His betrothed, Maiya Van Anders goes on the flight.  
 
Their wartime mission is to explore and mine the Asteroid Belt for critical minerals, primarily Iridium, and then to return with enough ore to fund the flight several times over.  Iridium is the key to a new kind of nuclear rocket drive (it really is) that can help the USA win the war with China.
 
Disaster has other plans.  A small rock pierces their craft at Mach-20.  They can't navigate nor phone home.  They must slow down and land on some asteroid large enough to have a bit of gravity, so they can try to make repairs.  Maiya spots it first, and they name it Maiya. 
 
But their ship could never navitate home before they starve.
 
They only have supplies for two years, but NASA chose them of the top 100 out of 10,000 applicants.  They are clever, resourceful, and full of hope, despite the certainty that there is no hope.   And there's no hope NASA can find them, ever.   Unless maybe....
 
To escape the deadly solar wind and flares, they must dig, but after all, they are a mining vessel.  Then then discover a baby is coming, and another at nearly the same time.  That dynamic threatens to be their final undoing.
